Or do you have a hard time prioritizing and knowing what will have an impact online?

If any of the above is true for you, then Digital Storytelling for Impact is a course for you.

Julia Wiklander is the instructor for Digital Storytelling for Impact. Learn more about her here.

Here’s why I created this course.

It was through the power of storytelling that I was able to build a global community of change makers for gender equality, human rights and social justice. As the founder and president of Girls’ Globe, I have seen the needs of passionate individuals and organizations to gain support for their work online.

I know how difficult it can be to prioritize between online activities, and even to commit to digital communications at all. That’s why I created this course.

Girls’ Globe and I want to support you to have a lasting impact through digital storytelling by:

  • strengthening your confidence in your unique strengths and perspectives,
  • creating clarity in your purpose, vision and stories,
  • and helping you strategically build an engaged online community of supporters.

Your voice is powerful.

Now’s the time for you to learn how to use it impactfully in our digital world!

– Julia

As a participant of Digital Storytelling for Impact you will…

  • Get clarity around your vision, purpose, audience and strategy to eradicate useless communication from your work completely

What others have said.

Joan
I would definitely recommend this course to others! We need to build a bigger movement of vocal individuals who want to see change in their homes, communities and all over the world. I have become a better digital storyteller and that is very evident in my pieces of work. Since participating in this course, I am more vocal than I was before.”
– Joan Atimango, Uganda
Program Officer, GirlUp Uganda

“This course helped me to identify personal strengths that I can leverage in my communication, as well as clarity and structure for a communication plan. I think digital communication is still under-utilised by researchers. While our core business is generating new evidence, its equally important to effectively communicate in order to better collaborate and implement new evidence. This course would be great for research teams to complete together.”

– Amy Vassallo, Australia
Research Fellow, Public Health and Gender Equity

“I loved this course from start to finish!
I always felt that I wanted to tell my story to inspire healing but I never knew that there would be a course to help me do that. I was very excited when I heard about this course. I loved that it wasn’t just about watching videos but that it also prompted us to reflect and look within ourselves for answers. I would recommend this course to others. We are all storytellers in one way or the other. “
– Sebabatso Tsaoane, South Africa
Midwife and Sexual and Reproductive Health Advocate, an ICM Young Midwifery Leader, Founder of Black Woman Arise Women’s Health Foundation and Mrs SA 2020 semi-finalist

“Since participating in the course, I have felt more motivated to challenge myself to step outside my comfort zone with activist-oriented research communication.
This course increased my awareness of the variety of available options for digital communications. I really enjoyed the concise videos and practical workbook activities which were easier than anticipated to fit into my full schedule. I would recommend this course to others. It is effective, engaging and practical.”

– Jennifer Infanti, Norway
Researcher, Department of Public Health and Nursing

“The course gave me more clarity and organization skills.
I liked that you can take it at your own pace. I enjoyed the document that was included with each lesson to help me brainstorm and organize. I would recommend it as it was very helpful. Before this course, I did most of my work by basically winging it and taking it step by step since I did not have any coaching or training. This course gave me more clarity, and it helped me identify my strategy and plan my digital activism better.”

– Alaa Al-Eryani, Yemeni Canadian
Founder of Yemeni Feminist Movement, Content Manager, Gender Consultant and Producer
“Since the course, I have a clearer vision of what it is I want to do in my social advocacy. It has given me a broader understanding of how digital tools can be used to amplify my voice. My ideas have expanded and I am goal orientated in the message I want to put out and the support I hope to garner. I really liked the work books because they guide you through the process of having a vision, creating a strategy, and implementing it as a plan. Yes, I would. It’s a great resource in helping a young activist or advocate gain understanding of their role and how to best execute it.”
– Tariro Mantsebo, Zimbabwe
M.D. and Founder of earth + blood, dedicated to the holistic, integrative health & well-being of black and brown female bodies.

“It gives me so much joy to experience the impact that sharing one’s story has.
Last year I attended the Digital Storytelling for Impact training and decided to start a personal blog after learning to claim my own space on the social platforms. In the few weeks it has been up, I can already feel the impact it’s starting to have. There have been inquiries on how one can join my profession, if I’m conducting trainings and even engagements for partnerships. I definitely recommend this course. It’s a plus for anyone desiring to be an activist.”

– Bartholomew Kamlewe, Zambia
Midwife and Community Activist. Young Midwifery Leader with International Confederation of Midwives
“I have attended similar courses and I wasn’t sure about the additions I would get from the course.
The course really helped me through the work guides dig deep into my personal stories. There are some I have never considered telling while in depth they truly speak about my activism journey and are very much relatable. I would recommend this training for all activists I know since it’s simple, useful and has a clear structure!”
Chaimae Bourjij, Morocco
Advocate for Freedom and Gender Equality, National Project Coordinator at Fondation Friedrich Naumann pour la Liberté au Maroc, Mobilizer Awardee 2018 at the UN SDG Action Campaign, and a She Decides Activist 2020.

It helped me to clarify my purpose, and focus my role as an activist.
I am a not very expressive person, who sometimes has trouble telling things about me. This course was a challenge for me, but it was fun and I learned through each lesson with the tips that Julia provided us.  I loved writing stories that support my activism, I think that is the essence of what we do. The tools we learned are necessary to clarify your role, connect and consequently have a greater impact on the people you want to reach.”

Esther Giron, Dominican Republic
Afrofeminist Activist and co-founder of Aquelarre RD, a feminist training organisation that works with marginalised communities, and a SheDecides Activist 2020.

Still wondering if this is right for you?

Let’s break down your options.

  • You could choose to hire a communications firm or consultant to put together a strategy and plan. For most, this is an unreasonable option for their budgets. Many firms and consultants have an hourly rate of between EUR 50-100 or much more! This course gives you the insight and tools to build your own powerful, authentic strategy and plan to a small fraction of the price of other external support.
  • You could do an in-depth digital communications focused course. However, passionate people are often busy people. Many courses go on for 8 weeks with an extensive price tag attached. Most courses also have a very strong presence of marketing for businesses. This course is 1 week and it focuses specifically on the impact you want to make in the world.
  • You can also choose to figure it all out yourself, which would require much more time and leave you feeling overwhelmed.

That said, this course is not a quick fix. It will help you put your necessary strategy and plan in place. To make an impact in the world, you’ll need to be dedicated and ready to follow through on that plan.

Got Questions or Concerns?

This course will help you get there. Whether you’re just getting started with digital communications, or if you’ve had an online presence for years, this course will help you define your next steps to create a greater impact in the world.

This course doesn’t dig deep into the technical steps of digital communications. Instead, it supports you to create a powerful strategy and plan. It provides you with additional resources that you may need to support you in learning further.

Sharing stories is an essential part of all of our lives – especially if you’re an activist. We tell stories to ourselves and others – all the time – whether we think about it or not. In this course, storytelling isn’t about sharing intriguing fictional accounts, it is about communicating clearly, and with heart, why something matters. When we share stories we connect with others in a stronger way. Humans learn and remember from stories – because of how they make us feel.

Individual storytelling is incredibly powerful. We as journalists know intuitively what scientists of the brain are discovering through brain scans, which is that emotional stories tend to open the portals, and that once there’s a connection made, people are more open to rational arguments.” says Pulizer Prize winning journalist and author Nicholas Kristoff.

In this course you will clearly define which stories are important to build support for your activism. It will help you build further confidence in and support for your work.

Storytelling does not necessarily require public speaking. However, as an activist, advocate or entrepreneur you may be required to lead and speak publicly.

That is why knowing what you are going to say and which stories to share is so important. This course will help you build confidence in what you communicate with others. The course also offers a special bonus lesson and additional resources on public speaking.

We know that you have other things to do with your time, which is why we have designed this course so flexibly. You can review the course materials any time, in any part of the world. All you need to do is log in to our learning platform to view your lesson and download you work guide and resources.

The course is shared through daily lessons, which take 1-2 hours per day.

You have access to the course for 3 months, so you have plenty of time to complete the course – even if something unexpected comes up.

Note: All coursework is for your eyes only. This course is for your personal and professional development – so there are no deadlines and nothing you need to submit in advance.

This is a limiting belief we’re here to bust for you.

Creativity requires time, practice, confidence and clarity in purpose. In this course we will support you in all those aspects. At the end of it you will understand just how creative you can be and how unique your perspective is.

Your unique creativity is needed to make a positive impact in the world.

Digital Storytelling for Impact starts with you and the change you want to see in the world. Many stories (your own and others’) have led you to where you are today. In this course you will gain the tools and support to brainstorm from your unique perspective and choose the stories that are of greatest importance to you and your cause.

So, we beg to differ. We truly believe that everyone has a story to share. This course will help you see the stories you have inside you too.

This course is in English, so you need a basic fluency in English to take this course. Since you can do the course in your own time, you can of course pause and use Google translate when needed.

You will need to assess your own language skills before enrolling.
